The volume on rights and the silence on responsibility never happen accidentally in the same person and the pattern is consistent enough across enough stories to have stopped being a coincidence a long time ago. He will show up to every court date, file every motion, and announce his parental rights to anyone positioned to witness the declaration with a passion and a persistence that would be genuinely admirable if it bore any relationship to what happens outside the courtroom. The performance of a father fighting for his child is convincing precisely because fighting looks like caring to anyone who cannot see what the fighting is actually about, which is control, access as leverage, and the continuation of a dynamic that ended with the relationship but was never truly about the child in any version of its existence.

And then the child needs something. Not the photographable something, not the social media appropriate something, but the ordinary unglamorous something that parenting actually consists of on every unremarkable Tuesday when nobody is watching and nothing is being documented for future legal proceedings. The school supplies, the medical copay, the winter coat, the basic financial contribution that a present and responsible parent provides not because a court ordered it but because a child they love requires it. The silence that arrives in response to that need tells the complete story that the courtroom performance was always designed to obscure. Rights without responsibility is not fatherhood, it is ownership, and a man who fights loudly for access while going quietly absent on provision has revealed through that specific combination exactly what the child actually represents to him and exactly what they do not.
