Durable, low maintenance and versatile - tiles are not just for your floors! Here are some unique ways to use tiles in your home.
Staircase Statements
Make your staircase interesting, be it indoors or outdoors, with gorgeous accent tiles. Choosing patterned tiles will make the staircase pop and become a statement leading up to the house, or another level, all on its own. Go for a bold minimalist tile or mix up the patterns with each new step.
Headboards
Classic material headboards can look grubby rather easily (especially if you have cats!). Opting for tiles instead is a practical alternative. Plus, it can be a modern touch to rustic homes or a sleek addition to contemporary rooms.
On the Ceiling
Back in another time, coffered ceilings and pressed steel ceilings were a grand and beautiful statement. In fact, if you’re lucky, you can still find some old South African houses with their original pressed steel ceilings intact! The modern alternative is taking tiles all the way up to your ceilings. It may sound a little loopy, the effect is nothing short of stunning.
Kitchen Backsplashes
Tiles are a way to bring in colour, fun shapes and a bit of character into the kitchen. The big practical plus is how easy they are to clean and how they withstand liquid. Considering how much dirt and grime can build up in a kitchen, and how many spills and oopsies it has to handle, this is a winning decision.
Fancy Fireplaces
I can’t imagine why we ever stopped surrounding our fireplaces with intricate tiling!

A South African's Guide to Moving to a Larger Home

Moving to a larger home is both an exciting prospect, and, for many South Africans, also a near panic-inducing one.

Unlike the first house you bought (usually without much collateral for the bank loan), you now own (or partly own) at least one large asset, meaning that the loan for the next house you purchase could be substantially larger than your first loan.

It is a daunting task, but you can ease your concerns by contacting me to get your free report entitled 'A South African's Guide to Moving to a Larger Home'.

To make moving less daunting, we spoke with pros for tips on what not to do while packing up those boxes and preparing for life in your new space.
Never Assume Your New Space Mimics Your Current Setup
More than likely, the layout of your current home will not be the same as your new home. Rather than packing items by room, we suggest packing some items in categories. This will allow you to focus on placing the more important items in your new home first.
Never Forget to Check All the Boxes
Use an adequate amount of bubble wrap to protect breakables, label each box, and cover other key bases. Label your boxes by category, add the room name of where you’d like it to land in your new home, and list key items you may find yourself searching for later.
Never Procrastinate
As soon as you have an idea you might be getting ready to move somewhere else, start the process of reviewing what you have and evaluating whether or not it would be important to have with you in your next home,
Never Pack At Random
Investing a bit more time upfront to pack correctly will make the move-in process much simpler.
Never Overpack Cardboard Boxes
Use as many boxes as you need to create easy-to-lift loads, and limit your large boxes to no more than 25kg.
Never Transport Useless Items
Take some time pre-move to do a mini cleanout and decide what will stay and what can be tossed or donated. Moving is also a chance to downsize and donate your good condition.

Lighting a Dark Room – 10 Top Tips from Experts

Lighting a dark room successfully can be demanding. But a scheme that provides good overall illumination, as well as task and mood lighting is a must if it’s going to be a space which is comfortable for all the activities that take place there, and one in which light levels can be adjusted to suit the mood.

1. Make use of LED strips
2. Illuminate a low ceiling
3. Pay attention to the room’s role
4. Employ the magic of mirrors
5. Be clever with downlights

Pools can be temperamental and a green pool is no fun at all, and it's often hard to fix. Here’s how you can remedy a green pool:

Get a water test
The significance of a water test is to make sure you have a clear understanding of what’s affecting the water in your pool from a chemical balance point of view.

Shock your pool
Shocking the pool is one of the most effective ways to get the job done. You can shock the pool by using huge amounts of chlorine. Chlorine naturally gets burnt off by direct sunlight, so consider shocking the pool when the sun has gone down.

Filter
You need to turn the filter on for at least 24 hours to get the dead algae out of the water, ensure that the shock has fully dissipated and that the water is completely clear.

Brush
You can also clean a green pool by using a heavy industrial brush. This is labour-intensive and time-consuming but the process takes care of algae on surfaces in and around the pool.

Regular maintenance
Regular maintenance shouldn’t be overlooked because it ensures the sustainability of the swimming pool. You can do this on a weekly or monthly basis depending on the availability of time and resources.

Implement the guidelines provided above to assist with maintaining a clean swimming pool.

5 Things to Remember When House-Hunting

House-hunting is very exciting but people often approach it with the wrong mindset. Naturally, buyers have a specific picture in their heads when it comes to their ideal home. It is good to have a mental image but this often distracts from a house’s potential. Here are 5 things you should not worry about when house-hunting:

1 – The paint colour can change
It might hurt your eyes to look at a house with bright green walls or light blue ceilings but this is easily fixable. Paint colour should not determine whether or not you buy a home.

2 – Don’t think of the furniture as your own
It is difficult to picture a room without furniture especially if the sellers left it there during an open house. Once you set up your own furniture, it’s going to look different. You can then style it to your heart’s content.

3 – The current layout will change
You might notice that the bigger bedroom is used as an office while the bed is squashed into a smaller room. Don’t fixate too much on the functions for each room.

4 – The lights can be spruced up
When an open house is dark then it is difficult to give it a second glance. Buyers are generally attracted to big rooms with lots of natural light. Remember that you can add as much additional light as you want.

5 – You can change the architectural details
Small tweaks shouldn’t cost you a lot of money and are a great way to add beautiful finishing touches. If you don’t like the wood panelling, for example, you can remove it.
