I have paid my insurance premium- but is that enough?
Most of us ensure that we stay at the right side of the law and we promptly pay our insurance premiums as and when same is due in order to ensure that we are covered. But at the end of the day, this unfortunately might not be enough to ensure that our rights are protected when we do get to the point where we need to institute a claim against our insurance.
Careful consideration should be given to the terms and conditions pertaining to your insurance policy, as various small issues may result in the rejection of claims, which could have easily been avoided.
The most common reasons for claim rejections according to the Ombudsman for Short-term Insurance includes inter alia the driving of a vehicle by an unlicensed driver, driving an unroadworthy vehicle, reckless driving, drunk driving, driver not the specified "regular driver", insurance only for total loss where vehicle is written off, tracker device not fitted, material non disclosure, vehicle not parked securely at night.
Few people also know this, but you should inform your insurer immediately when you relocate, as the area in which you reside also affects your insurance premium, which may put you at risk when your premium should have increased according to the area you have relocated to. This will have the effect that you may not be fully covered and your insurance will only pay out the portion of the damages according to the insurance premium you have paid.
Nevertheless, in any matter dealing with Short-term Insurance, the consumer has the right to refer any matter to the Ombudsman for consideration and we strongly recommend that this be done in any situation where there is any doubt regarding the outcome of an insurance claim. This service by the Ombudsman is rendered free to consumers, but consumers has the right to make use of legal representation to assist them with their complaints.
