PRESSURE MOUNTS ON SOL PLAATJE MUNICIPALITY OVER R442K FESTIVE EXPENDITURE / First Published: 29 December 2025
Sol Plaatje Municipality is facing renewed scrutiny over its reported R442,000 expenditure on a Christmas Family Fun Day and the Galeshewe Creative Arts Market, with mounting questions around transparency, value for money and accountability.
The municipality’s LED Unit has defended the spending as part of its local economic development and tourism mandate. However, several key questions remain unanswered, including the actual attendance figures, procurement process followed, beneficiary impact and whether the expenditure delivered measurable value to local residents and businesses.
Concern intensified after a cost breakdown reportedly presented to councillors suggested that, for an event said to have attracted about 50 attendees, catering alone may have worked out to roughly R600 per person.
Further allegations have also surfaced regarding a possible relationship between the appointed service provider and a senior official within the Local Economic Development Unit. These claims remain unverified, and the municipality has not yet issued a clear public response on whether any conflict-of-interest declarations were made.
If proven, such links would raise serious governance and procurement questions, particularly at a time when the municipality continues to face financial pressure, service delivery challenges and outstanding obligations to key institutions.
Councillors and residents are now demanding full disclosure, including:
A detailed expenditure breakdown
The procurement method used
Proof of attendance and event impact
Any conflict-of-interest declarations
Evidence of local economic benefit
The municipality has previously stated its commitment to transparency. But five months later, as of 29 May 2026, no one appears to have been held accountable.
What began as a festive event has now become a test of governance, consequence management and public trust at Sol Plaatje Municipality.
