Colleagues, let me also speak frankly about a gap we must urgently address. Too often, when we gather to speak about human rights and gender equality, government departments, Chapter 9 institutions, and civil society are in the room. But where is the private sector? Where are the mines, the farms, the hotels, the factories that employ thousands of our people?

The truth is: gender inequality does not end at the school gate or the police station. It lives in workplaces too — in the unequal pay slips of women and men doing the same job; in the unsafe hostels where women miners fear walking home at night; in the seasonal contracts where farmworkers cannot claim maternity rights; and in the hospitality industry where harassment is treated as ‘part of the job.’

The private sector cannot remain absent from these conversations, because they are part of the problem — and must be part of the solution. Their contribution to gender equality is not charity; it is accountability. It is a legal duty, a moral obligation, and a measure of social justice.

We must insist that mining, agriculture, tourism, and other sectors report on their progress, open themselves to scrutiny, and work alongside us to ensure dignity and equality for all. If the private sector continues to lag behind, then the promise of our Constitution remains unfulfilled.

Today, I want us to send a clear message: gender justice is everybody’s business. And that includes business itself.”

The CGE in Northern Cape participated at the event to commemorate International Women's Day, where CGE Commissioner Seehaam Samaai spoke on Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights. Commissioner Samaai mentioned the importance of SRH rights and how they ensure and protect the individual's right to freedom to make decisions about their body.
