Yesterday marked the conclusion of the final day of Johannesburg Arbitration Week (JAW) 2026, held in Sandton, which examined the strategic role of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) in securing Africa’s industrial future and strengthening cooperation across the continent. Through the lens of sustainable development, discussions explored the intersection of legal frameworks and economic transformation, particularly in relation to critical mineral value retention and mining governance.
The day also featured the formalisation of several strategic partnerships through Memoranda of Understanding with continental and global institutions, reinforcing a shared commitment to building a more integrated, credible, and investment-enabling arbitration ecosystem for Africa.
A spirited Oxford-style debate hosted by Young AFSA explored the evolving roles of mediation and arbitration in navigating geopolitical rivalry, followed by reflections on the conference’s key outcomes. A consistent theme throughout the day was that Africa’s arbitration future will depend on proactive collaboration, agile legal frameworks responsive to shifting global realities, and continued investment in practitioner development to strengthen long-term institutional credibility.
