We are excited to announce that we will be hosting a Vac Work Strategies Workshop at the Emeris Ruimsig Campus on Monday, 18 May 2026.

With vacation work applications becoming increasingly competitive, this session will focus on helping law students understand what actually moves the needle during recruitment processes.

From application strategies and CV positioning to psychometric assessments, interviews, networking, and understanding what law firms are truly looking for, the workshop is designed to equip students with practical insights that are often not taught in the classroom.

At SMA, we remain committed to bridging the gap between legal education and the realities of the legal profession by creating spaces that expose students to the standards, expectations, and opportunities within the industry.

We look forward to engaging with the students at Emeris and contributing meaningfully to their career journeys.

That recruiter clip on TikTok started a much bigger conversation than we expected 😭

One of the recruiters at our Recruiters’ Luncheon mentioned that they often ask candidates what they are currently reading up on and a lot of the responses under the video were interesting.

Some people felt the question is unfair because “people have lives outside of law.”
Others said it puts unnecessary pressure on candidates.
And some completely understood why firms ask it.

But maybe the real conversation is this:

Are recruiters actually asking what you’re reading for the sake of the book itself… or are they trying to understand how genuine your interest is in the areas of law you claim to be passionate about?

Because there’s a difference between saying:
“I’m passionate about Intellectual Property Law”
and actually being able to speak about trends, cases, articles, books, creators, or conversations within that space.

We thought this would be an interesting discussion to bring to Instagram as well because the TikTok comments were divided 😭

What are your thoughts? Is this a fair interview question or not?🤷🏽‍♂️

We asked a few more students what they were looking forward to before the Recruiters’ Luncheon started… and their answers were really insightful.

From wanting to understand recruitment processes better, to meeting recruiters face to face, to networking with other ambitious students in the room; everyone came in looking for something meaningful.

That’s always the goal with spaces like these at SMA.

Creating opportunities for students to learn, connect, ask questions, and gain real insight into the legal profession beyond the classroom.

Really excited to share more moments from the day 💚

One of the moments that really stood out at our recent SMA Recruiters’ Luncheon was the conversation around ATS systems and how they actually work behind the scenes 👀

touched on the importance of understanding how Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) screen and move applications from one stage to the next and why so many strong candidates are often overlooked before a recruiter even sees their CV.

From keywords, formatting, and structure to tailoring your application properly, students got a real inside look into how recruitment processes are evolving and what it truly takes to stand out in today’s legal job market.

These are the kinds of conversations that shift mindsets and change outcomes.

Before the room filled, before the conversations started, before the networking even began… we asked a simple question:

“What are you most looking forward to today?”

And the answers say everything.

From wanting real insight into how recruitment actually works, to building meaningful connections with recruiters, to simply being in a room where opportunity feels tangible… this is exactly why we do this.

At SMA, it’s never just about an event.
It’s about creating spaces where students feel seen and positioned.

And if this is what they were expecting walking in… imagine what they walked away with.

To every recruiter and guest who joined us at the SMA Recruiters’ Luncheon this past Saturday; thank you for showing up, pouring into our students, and sharing such powerful, honest insights about the legal profession and recruitment space.

The conversations in that room mattered. The guidance you gave, the time you invested, and the openness with which you engaged is exactly what helps bridge the gap between potential and opportunity for so many aspiring legal professionals.

We don’t take your presence lightly, and we are truly grateful for the role you continue to play in shaping the next generation of legal talent.

This is only the beginning. We look forward to building even stronger relationships and creating more meaningful spaces together in the near future.

There are moments that remind you why you started… and this past Saturday was one of them.

Our SMA Recruiters’ Luncheon brought together ambitious law students, graduates, and some of the most impactful recruiters in the room and the energy was undeniable. From the moment we started, it wasn’t just about networking… it was about real conversations, real insight, and real opportunity.

We saw students step into their confidence through elevator pitches, ask meaningful questions about psychometric assessments, gain clarity on their CVs and personal brand, and most importantly be seen. Numbers were exchanged, connections were built, and for many, this was their first time sitting across the table from the very people who shape hiring decisions.

What stood out the most is that this wasn’t surface-level engagement. It was intentional and it was honest. And it reaffirmed something we’ve always believed at SMA; that when you put the right people in the right room, lives change.

The fact that this experience sells out within 24 hours… and that students are already asking for the next one… tells us everything we need to know. We’re not just hosting events. We’re creating access. We’re building bridges. And we’re shifting what’s possible for law students in South Africa.

If you were in the room, you felt it.
If you missed it… you already know.

The next one? You don’t want to hear about it. You want to be in it. 🤍

We are honoured to welcome Zola Williams to the SMA Recruiters’ Luncheon.

Zola serves as the Professional Development Manager at Adams & Adams in Pretoria, where she works closely with the Graduate Recruitment Committee to drive and execute the firm’s talent management strategy. With over 20 years of experience in graduate recruitment and people development, she brings a depth of insight that has shaped and continues to shape the trajectory of legal talent within the profession.

This is not our first time engaging with Zola. We have previously had the privilege of hosting her in our online masterclasses, where she has consistently shared practical, honest, and impactful guidance with our students. Her ability to bridge the gap between what firms are looking for and how candidates should position themselves is something we deeply value at SMA.

To now have her join us in person for this year’s Recruiters’ Luncheon is incredibly special. It speaks to the continued alignment between SMA and leaders within the legal profession who are intentional about developing the next generation.

We are truly looking forward to the conversations, the insights, and the impact that Zola will bring into the room as we connect our students with the people shaping opportunities within the industry.
