Ahead of , Murray Hunter has been flying the ALT flag in Mauritius for a convening on countering surveillance and digital repression in Africa.

Alongside good food and great weather, it was a valuable opportunity for practitioners across Africa to compare experiences and share strategies to strengthen oversight and democratic protections against surveillance abuses in the modern era. Many thanks to the organisers, and we wish attendees of well for the discussions ahead!

[Advisory / ] The UNEP's latest assessment of global progress on climate adaptation has found a major shortfall in financing to help developing countries adapt to the impacts of climate change. The report, which comes a month before the COP28 climate summit, identifies a range of steps to increase adaptation financing.

Last week the ALT and Power Singh Inc. teams gathered for a 'Future Thought' session hosted by the brilliant Christy Chitengu, on citizenship and LGBTQI+ people in South Africa: specifically, on the need for greater protections for trans and intersex individuals seeking to have the state recognise their gender identity.

It was a long journey, but worth it for such important work!

[Research / ] We recently prepared this submission for the UN’s High-Level Advisory Board on AI, outlining fundamental challenges in global AI governance, and the nascent state of AI governance in Africa. It concludes with recommendations for developing an approach to AI governance that benefits all states and ensures Africa is not left behind.

[Publication / ] We are proud to have partnered with the Lowenstein Clinic at Yale Law School for this new report on the causes, and possible solutions, to online ethnic hate speech in Kenya.

The research, which draws on interviews with more than 30 local stakeholders, identifies the need for Kenyan policymakers to align domestic laws with international standards -- and for social media giants to deliver faster, more transparent content moderation, which includes local staff.

As societies across the world grapple with the rise of online hate, Kenya has the opportunity to set a global standard for a localised, rights-based response.
