Durban is a city that carries its history in its walls.

A mosque built in 1881 by two men with £150 and a vision. A Hindu temple raised along the Umbilo River by labourers who arrived on these shores with almost nothing. A market that burned to the ground and came back louder, more colourful, more alive than before.

These buildings are not relics. They are living, breathing centres of community - still used, still loved, still standing in a city that has changed almost beyond recognition around them.

This September, NMA Attorneys is celebrating Durban's Heritage Month with a series dedicated to the buildings that define this city , the stories behind them, the communities that built them, and the remarkable history embedded in their walls.

Because Durban isn't just a place. It's a story. And some of the best chapters are written in brick, mortar and faith.

This is our city. This is our Heritage.

We started this series with Irene Geffen - South Africa's first female lawyer, admitted to the bar in 1923.

We end it with her daughter.
Felicia Kentridge was born Felicia Nahoma Geffen in 1930. Where her mother had walked through a door that had just been unlocked, Felicia walked into a country where the law was being used as a weapon against the majority of its own people, and decided to turn it around. In 1979, alongside Sydney Kentridge and Arthur Chaskalson, she co-founded the Legal Resources Centre, built on one purpose: to use the law to fight the law.

The LRC's victories reshaped South Africa. The Komani and Rikhoto cases - won in 1980 and 1983, dismantled the pass law system that controlled where Black South Africans could live, move, and work. The Komani case began with one woman, Nonceba Komani, ordered by the state to leave the township where her husband lived. The LRC took it to court. They won. And kept winning - until the pass system collapsed and was abolished in 1986.

Felicia also founded the Wits Law Clinic and the LRC's Candidate Attorney Programme, training the next generation of public-interest lawyers. The LRC still operates across South Africa today.

We close this series not with a single case, but with a life's work, and a reminder that the South Africa we practise law in was built by women like her.
