Our head of research, Mr Sipho Ntombela, gave a message of support to the UNICEF campus club- Howard college in its initiative of championing the cause of children's rights.

Platforms such as this one do not only create awareness and champion advocates, but initiate a move to molding the law to the lived reality of South Africa’s young.

S28 of the constitution states that children’s best interests are of paramount importance in every matter concerning them.
The legislature’s framework that is the children’s act passed in 2005 inclusive of subsequent amendments give a thoroughly detailed expression of this section. And we can celebrate this piece of legislation together with similar international ones because of their progressive stance on children’s rights.

However, these progressive frameworks become static in part because they are rarely employed. The boy begging at the Musgrave traffic lights knows nothing of s28 same as the girl thrown out of her parents’ house because she is pregnant has no idea that her rights are violated. Their agency is limited to the choices exercised by their care-givers, their community members specifically and the community of humanity in general.

Let's take this cause up and use our agency for the good of our most vulnerable group: children.

This day marks the 6th democratic national and provincial elections in South Africa. The UKZN SLR urges all of you who have registered to not only exercise your constitutional right to vote but to do so by aligning your Xs with your aspirations for this country. Let your X honour those who have sacrificed their lives for this right and let it bring South Africa closer to its envisaged self.

This workers' day, let us reflect on the state of labour rights. Let's celebrate the triumphs of our country in enacting the National Minimum Wage act, Employment Equity Act, Basic Conditions of Employment Act and e.t.c. In the same spirit, let us confront and address the issues still prevalent in the working community including the issue of unemployment.

Let's continue developing law!
