Equal Education Law Centre

Equal Education Law Centre The Equal Education Law Centre (EELC) is a free law clinic that engages in public interest legal act

The EELC was established to advocate for a society in which equal and quality education is accessible to all learners, and is not dependent on their socio-economic status. The aim is to safeguard every learner’s right to equal and quality education. EELC advocates by using the law and the constitution to address problems that are faced by the legal system. The EELC has three focus areas- Community

Lawyering, Movement Lawyering as well as Legal Research and Advocacy. The EELC provides a walk-in clinic which offers free legal advice and support on education related issues. EELC lawyers are activists and remain actively engaged in the struggles of our sister organisation, EE. They are on hand to provide legal materials, and strategic legal action to promote the fight for equal and quality education. The EELC champions legal and policy development in education, including sending submissions to relevant government institutions, conducting legal and policy research related to the objectives and where possible, assisting communities, community-based organisations and other institutions to formulate their own policy and legal perspectives.

Powerful grassroots-level discussions at the 2nd Annual Menstrual Health Equity Summit highlighted how menstrual health is deeply shaped by safety, privacy, water access, school infrastructure, education and stigma.

A high school learner from Gugulethu, Cape Town, shared her experience of missing school, using paper when menstrual products are unavailable and navigating unsafe sanitation facilities.

Menstrual health equity requires us to look beyond products alone and confront the broader conditions that impact dignity, safety and access to education.

Equal Education and Equal Education Law Centre condemn xenophobic violence spreading into schools. Schools must be safe for every child, regardless of nationality.

We call on members to refuse participation, and on Education Departments & SAPS to urgently protect ALL learners at risk.

Every child is protected by the Constitution.

[Menstrual Health Summit] This past weekend, we supported I_Menstruate Movement by co-hosting the Annual Menstrual Health Equity Summit, a two-day gathering dedicated to advancing dignity, safety, and access in menstrual health. The summit opened with a powerful dialogue that brought together diverse perspectives on the management of menstrual health across different contexts, highlighting its implications for equity and human rights.πŸ—£οΈ

On Day 2, our Head of Research and Advocacy, Katherine Sutherland, facilitated a session reflecting on the costing study for the proposed Menstrual Health Equity Bill. πŸ“‰ This was followed by a discussion on public budgeting processes and the strategic entry points civil society can leverage to influence funding priorities and ensure effective implementation.✊🏾
