From 1st October 2020, international travel from the African continent and from countries outside the African continent with a low rate of Covid -19 infection and transmission, will resume.
This will be subject to:
1. the traveller providing a valid certificate of a negative test, which was obtained not more than 72 hours before the date of travel; and
2. in the event of the traveller's failure to submit a certificate as proof of a negative test, the traveller will be required to quarantine at his or her own cost.

The list of countries with a high Covid -19 infection and transmission rate will be published and may be, from time to time, be amended.
International travellers from countries having a high Covid -19 infection and transmission rate will remain prohibited from entry, except for business travel which may be allowed with the approval of the cabinet member responsible for the Department of Home Affairs.
All commercial seaports will be opened but international air travel is restricted to the following airports: OR Tambo International Airport, King Shaka International Airport and Cape Town International Airport. The land border posts which were open during lockdown will continue to be open.

Visa holders currently stranded abroad may apply for an authorization to enter South Africa prior to the end of lockdown. The same applies for other scenarios. You can contact us for guidance and assistance.

Visas of foreigners, who are currently in South Africa, which expired during lockdown will remain valid until the 31st October 2020. Foreigners can leave South Africa without being declared undesirable until then.

Progress! Check out the the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) new eChannel (https://ehome.dha.gov.za/eChannel/Home/UserFiltering). The DHA has recently launched its online service which allows for the application of smart ID's and passports online. Biometrics and Photographs will still be required however and at this stage applicants will still need to their regional DHA office for this purpose - once their application is uploaded and paid for. However, the DHA is working on processes with banking institutions like Nedbank, FNB, Standard Bank and ABSA who will provide facilities in order to allow for additional points at which applicants can achieve having their biometrics and fingerprints taken and thus having to avoid visiting their local DHA office. This service is currently only available to applicants between the age of 30-35. The full roll out will take place at various intervals over the next few months. Very interesting precedent setting judgement that may pave the way for a positive change for foreign nationals who are the spouses / life partners of South Africans and/or permanent residents of South Africa.
