It was a chance to share what’s growing, exchange ideas and explore how partnerships can help strengthen community food security and grow the impact of projects like this.

Our garden is about more than growing food. It’s about creating practical, sustainable solutions that can make a real difference in the communities we serve.

And there’s so much more we can achieve together. 💚

♻️ 20+ schools. One practical Zero Waste campaign.

We’ve already visited a number of schools as part of our Zero Waste Education campaign with Petco Producer Responsibility Organisation NPC - and there’s more to come.

Learners are getting practical, interactive lessons on what can be recycled, how to separate materials and which bins to use correctly.

Because telling people to recycle is one thing. Knowing how to recycle correctly is another. 🌱

We’re taking that knowledge into 20+ schools across the region, helping turn recycling awareness into everyday habits.

For Melanie Beukes de Wet, every tonne diverted from landfill tells a story of practical progress.

As Junior Project Manager for Waste Programmes at The Greater Tygerberg Partnership (GTP), Melanie oversees the daily operations of a Buy-Back Centre. She works to keep the centre efficient and financially sustainable while supporting staff development, monitoring waste diversion and measuring its environmental impact.

The results make her work meaningful: valuable materials remain in circulation while the programme creates opportunities for people and communities.

Melanie believes women belong in every industry, including waste management and sustainability. Her advice to young women is to stay curious, keep learning and trust their ability to create positive environmental and social change.

What happens when leaders step out of the boardroom and into the places they have the power to change?

Recently, we took members of our Northern Collective through Bellville to see the work happening on the ground — and, importantly, where there is still more to do.

From public spaces and urban gardens to informal traders, recycling initiatives and projects creating opportunities for people, the tour showed what real urban regeneration looks like in practice.

But this wasn’t simply a tour.

It was about giving leaders a closer understanding of Bellville so they can start asking a bigger question:

Where can our influence, expertise and resources make a real difference?

Because lasting change doesn’t happen through one organisation, one project or one sector.

It happens when business, government and communities come together around real challenges and find practical ways to solve them.

That’s what the Northern Collective is about — turning collective influence into collective impact.

And there is room for more organisations to be part of that change.

We believe that even small improvements can make a big difference. A well-cared-for garden doesn't just brighten a street - it sends a message that this is a place worth caring for.
