Communication

When communication breaks down, it makes it hard to progress.

Lack of communication can snowball, with each side blaming the other, giving them the silent treatment or withholding information. Facing each other through mediation to achieve an agreement also helps preserve an amicable relationship post divorce/seperation– this is particularly important if there are children involved.

Negotiation is often referred to as a very specific skill - 'the art of negotiation', but it is an essential life skill, as well as conflict resolution skills. We need to teach this to our children from an early age so that it becomes a normal and natural way of tackling issues.

What if after mediating your parenting plan you continue to see your mediator once a month? Whether it be to check in or to raise new or ongoing concerns. Co parenting is a journey that requires consistent care and attention. If we can preempt conflict we can sometimes prevent it. Managing expectations with open discussion through the use of a neutral third party, in a safe space is a good way to achieve this.

CIM (Child Inclusive Mediation) or Voice of the Child.

This refers to a mediator (child consultant) who would represent the child. This person would have specific training in talking to children and capturing the voice of the child. It is important that children have information fed back to them in a way they can understand. This person will explore in order to understand and then convey in order to inform the child.

The voice of the child is a phrase used to describe the real involvement of children. Children need to have their point of view considered and their feelings listened to. The participation of the child creates a child focused process. Involvement should be continual. Children are the experts in their own lives.
