Wits Fees Must Fall
As the Senior Executive Team of the university insists on the continuation of the academic program amidst violent disruptions and clashes with the police, many students seem to be voicing their dissatisfaction with the alleged lack of support the Executives seem to be showing for the cause. The call for free, quality and decolonised education.
After 4 weeks of protest the fight does not seem to be reaching an end, the shutdown of a majority of the Higher education institutions in RSA has not seemed to be enough to inspire government intervention, leaving all the pressure to the institutions themselves. Criticism arose when it was reported that Pres. Jacob Zuma has set up a cabinet task team to handle the issue, however said team lacks an authority to manage the financial implications of Free Education.
This resulted in the students heeding support from many other organisations and societies, even outgoing Public Protector Thuli Madonsela who has shown her support by raising R660 000 for the cause.
The BLA has and continues to play it's role in assuring a resolution is reached, one that facilitates the interests of all parties involved but as the cause dictates one which benefits the underprivileged.
More information is to follow on the WitsBLAsc participation in the movement today as the Executive committee meets to discuss amongst other the things, the call for Free, Quality and Decolonised education.
