A giant has left us.

Gary England wasn’t just a legend in meteorology; he was my dear friend & mentor. He was the voice I grew up hearing through stormy Oklahoma nights, and the reason I chased a career in weather. I was lucky enough to know him as more than the weather legend he is; I got to know the man himself.

Gary had a presence about him. Calm. Commanding. Steady. The kind of presence you clung to when the sky turned black and sirens wailed. And when the camera was off, he was kind. Generous. Hilarious. He believed in the next generation, and he made time for people like me, young broadcasters trying to find our way.

His influence on my life is immeasurable. He taught me what it means to serve your community. What it means to show up when it matters most. How to keep giving, even when you've been on for days. How to laugh on the sunny days and how to care for people through the hard ones.

Oklahoma is better because Gary England was in it. And I’m better because I knew him.

Thank you, Gary. For everything.

Sometimes the best thing I can do for myself, and for everyone who counts on me, is to go outside and water the flowers.

To unplug.
To breathe.
To let my brain stop solving and just enjoy something beautiful.

Evenings in the garden have become my reset button.
A place where rest isn’t indulgent, it’s necessary.

Because if I don’t recharge, I can’t lead clearly.
And if I don’t find peace for myself, I can’t protect it for others.

Do you have an evening routine you count on or a reset button that works for you?

Mornings look a little different these days…

Not long ago, I started my day under studio lights, delivering the forecast to thousands of you before sunrise. I was your morning meteorologist for nearly a decade, and many of you welcomed me into your homes with coffee in hand and sleepy eyes.

Now, my mornings are slower and a little quieter—usually shared with my husband, dog, a walk through the flowers, and a whole new kind of storm to manage.

I’m still waking up early. Still forecasting what's ahead. But these days, I’m the COO and a partner at a national estate and business planning law firm, Evans & Davis, where I lead operations, technology, strategy, and growth for a team that’s doing some really meaningful work.

It’s been a big shift—and one I haven’t talked about much here. But I’m ready to start sharing more about this chapter, too. It’s full of people, purpose, and moments that challenge me in the best way.

Thanks for being part of my story—whether you’ve been here since the first forecast or just stopped by for the flowers.

More soon,
Shelby
