The Indian embassy in Hanoi has urged Indians to obtain a Vietnamese visa even if they plan to visit only visa-free Phu Quoc, warning that unexpected travel to the mainland could otherwise lead to complications.
In a notice posted on its official page, the embassy said while Phu Quoc Island offers visa-free entry, it allows travel and stay only within the island and does not permit entry into mainland Vietnam.
But in case of medical emergencies or flight disruptions, travelers may need to travel to major cities like Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi for treatment, onward journeys or consular assistance.
Without a valid Vietnamese visa, individuals in such circumstances could face challenges, including travel restrictions, delays in accessing healthcare services and immigration-related complications, the embassy warned.
Vietnam has seen a surge in the number of Indian visitors in recent years.
According to the Vietnam National Tourism Administration, the country received 243,000 Indian tourists in the first quarter of 2026, a 69% increase year-on-year.
Phu Quoc, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City are among their most popular destinations.
Known for its long sandy beaches and upscale resorts, Phu Quoc has become a key draw for international tourists.
