There are dozens of Vietnam visa websites that look official. Some are legitimate agencies. Some take your $80 and disappear. Here's how to tell them apart in about thirty seconds.

The only government portal is evisa.gov.vn. Everything else is a private service — including us, and any site that doesn't say so plainly is already lying to you.

Red flags worth checking: a domain built to look governmental (words like "official", "gov", "immigration" stitched into the URL), no fixed price shown before you enter passport details, payment by bank transfer to a personal account only, and a claimed 24/7 support line that never picks up.

Green flags: the service states its fee and the government fee separately, tells you plainly that the $25 government fee is non-refundable, and doesn't promise approval. Nobody can promise approval. Anyone who does is selling you something they don't control.

The single most common reason a Vietnam eVisa gets rejected isn't a mistake in your details. It's the passport photo.

Not the portrait — the bio page scan. People photograph it at an angle, or with a phone flash bouncing off the laminate, or with the edge of the page cut off. The system accepts the upload, then a human rejects it days later, and by then you've lost a week.

Lay the passport flat, natural light from the side, no flash, all four corners visible, and check that the machine-readable strip at the bottom is sharp enough to read every character. If you can't read it on your phone screen, neither can they.

For the portrait: plain white background, no glasses, no smile, straight on. A cropped selfie will fail.

Application stuck on "Processing" for a week and your flight is in four days. Here's what's actually going on.

Vietnamese immigration doesn't process applications on weekends or public holidays. If you submitted on a Thursday evening Vietnam time, you effectively lost Friday to the queue and the whole weekend after it. People count seven "days" and panic; the system only counted three working ones.

The other thing nobody tells you: there's no priority queue you can join after submitting. The processing tier is set at submission. If you picked standard and now need it in 48 hours, the honest answer is that a new expedited application is usually faster than waiting for the stuck one — and you'd be paying the government fee twice.

Before you do anything, check the status properly. You need your registration code, the email you applied with, and your date of birth — all three, or the portal won't show you anything.

Quick tip for anyone applying for a Vietnam eVisa this week.

The "intended date of entry" you type into the form is not a suggestion. Your visa becomes valid from that exact date. Land at the airport one day earlier and immigration will turn you around — the visa technically doesn't exist yet.

If your plans are still loose, put the earliest date you could possibly arrive. Arriving later than your entry date is fine; arriving earlier is not.

Same logic applies to the port of entry. It's locked to whatever you selected. Fly into Da Nang on a visa that says Tan Son Nhat and you have a problem at the counter, not a paperwork detail you can sort out later.

Your card gets declined on the Vietnam eVisa portal — but the money still leaves your account. This one confuses people every day.

What usually happens: the government portal charges the fee before the application is fully created. If the transaction fails at the 3D Secure step, the payment gets held but no registration code is generated. So you're out $25 and have no application.

Two things to know. First, that held amount is almost always an authorisation hold, not a real charge — most banks release it within 7–10 business days. Second, do not keep retrying with the same card. Each retry creates another hold. Foreign-issued cards get blocked most often by banks that flag Vietnam as high-risk; calling your bank to whitelist the transaction first works better than a fifth attempt.

If you already retried three times and have no registration code, you'll need a fresh application, not a fix to the old one.

Landing at Tan Son Nhat between 8 and 10 PM? A heads-up about immigration queues.

That window is when most long-haul flights arrive within an hour of each other, and the immigration hall fills up fast. We've had travelers report anywhere from 25 minutes on a lucky night to over 90 minutes when 3-4 wide-bodies land back to back. Hanoi (Noi Bai) has the same problem around 11 PM - 1 AM.

A few things that actually help:

✅ Have your eVisa PRINTED, not just on your phone. Officers process paper faster, and your phone battery after a 12-hour flight is a gamble.

✅ Fill in everything before you queue. Fumbling for documents at the counter is how a 30-second check becomes 3 minutes — for everyone behind you too.

✅ Don't follow the crowd. Most passengers pile into the lanes nearest the entrance. The counters at the far end often have half the queue.

✅ If you have a tight connection, a late-night hotel check-in, or kids melting down after a long flight — airport fast track exists. A staff member meets you at the gate area and takes you through a priority lane. Usually 10-15 minutes total instead of an hour-plus.

Your Vietnam eVisa is locked to ONE specific entry point. It's not like most visas that work at any border. Land at a different airport and the airline can deny you boarding — even with an approved visa in hand.

The tricky part: you pick the entry port on the application form, often before flights are even booked. Change your plans later and the visa doesn't change with you.

This message usually means the government payment gateway rejected your card, NOT that you did something wrong. It happens a lot with certain foreign cards, especially Amex and some debit cards.
Three things to know before you try again:
1️⃣ Check your bank first. Sometimes the charge went through even though the visa portal says "failed." Retrying immediately can mean paying twice.
2️⃣ "Recreate profile" means exactly that — the system wants a fresh application, not the same one resubmitted. Copy your details somewhere before starting over.
3️⃣ Use a Visa or Mastercard credit card if you can. They have the highest success rate with the portal.
