MAJOR POLICY UPDATE: Vietnam Simplifies Foreign Document Authentication Starting September 11, 2026.

For expats living and working in Vietnam, processing paperwork—such as work permits, marriage registrations, or residency applications—has historically required a tedious, multi-step "consular legalization" process for foreign public documents.

Starting September 11, 2026, this process is getting a massive and welcome upgrade 🎊

📣Under the new Decree 293/2026/NĐ-CP, foreign public documents from member countries will only require a single Apostille stamp to be legally recognized and ready for use in Vietnam.

👉 What does this mean for expats?

- Previously, foreign documents like university degrees, criminal background checks, or marriage certificates had to be authenticated by your home country's embassy or consulate, and then legalized again by Vietnam's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

- With this new policy, the double-step consular legalization is completely abolished for countries in the Apostille Convention. As long as your document has the Apostille stamp issued by the competent authority in your home country, it can be submitted directly to Vietnamese authorities.

NEW STRICTER PENALTIES FOR VISA OVERSTAY IN VIETNAM

Attention all expats, foreign tourists, and sponsoring organizations in Vietnam! 🇻🇳

According to the new Decree 282/2025/ND-CP, the Vietnamese government has significantly increased the administrative fines for visa, temporary residence card (TRC), and e-visa overstays. If your visa expires, even by just one day, you are subject to heavy penalties.

Here is what you need to know to stay compliant:

* FINES FOR INDIVIDUALS: The penalty depends strictly on the number of days you have overstayed:

- Under 16 days: 500,000 – 2,000,000 VND
- 16 to under 30 days: 5,000,000 – 10,000,000 VND
- 30 to under 60 days: 10,000,000 – 15,000,000 VND
- 60 to under 90 days: 15,000,000 – 20,000,000 VND
- 90 to under 180 days: 20,000,000 – 25,000,000 VND
- 180 days to under 1 year: 25,000,000 – 30,000,000 VND
- 1 year or more: 30,000,000 – 40,000,000 VND

* FINES FOR ORGANIZATIONS & SPONSORS: For companies or agencies that sponsor foreign workers but fail to manage their stay, the fine is DOUBLE the penalty applied to individuals. This means an organization can face a maximum fine of up to 80,000,000 VND.

* ADDITIONAL SEVERE CONSEQUENCES: It is not just a financial penalty. Overstaying your visa can lead to serious legal actions:

🚫 Deportation: Overstaying for 16 days or more can result in forced deportation from Vietnam.
⛔ Blacklist: Violators may be added to the immigration blacklist, resulting in a temporary or permanent ban from re-entering the country.

💡 CRUCIAL TIPS TO AVOID PENALTIES:
- Check your expiry date NOW: Always keep an eye on the valid dates on your Visa or TRC.
- Renew early: If you plan to extend your stay, start the procedure at least 15 days before your current visa expires.
- Do not try to slip through the airport: If you realize you have overstayed, do NOT go straight to the airport to leave. You will be stopped. You must present yourself to the Immigration Office, declare the violation honestly, and pay the fine first.

👉 Khai báo đầy đủ thông tin cá nhân trước khi đến cửa khẩu nhập cảnh
Fully declare personal information prior to arriving at the immigration checkpoint.

👉 Sau khi hoàn tất khai báo, hệ thống sẽ cấp mã QR xác nhận
Upon successful completion of the declaration, the system will generate a confirmation QR code.

👉 Xuất trình mã QR cho cán bộ kiểm soát tại Công an cửa khẩu – Sân bay Quốc tế Tân Sơn Nhất khi làm thủ tục nhập cảnh
Present this QR code to the immigration officer at Tan Son Nhat International Airport during clearance procedures.
