Exciting News for Expats and Travelers in Vietnam! 🇻🇳
The State Bank of Vietnam (SBV) has just rolled out a game-changing update via Circular 45/2025/TT-NHNN, effective from January 5, 2026. Previously, foreigners needed a long-term visa (at least 12 months) to apply for a debit card like Visa Debit. But now, that's history!
If you're on a tourist visa or any short-term visa (under 12 months), you can now apply for a Visa Debit card at Vietnamese banks. The catch? The card's validity will match the remaining duration of your current visa. Once your visa expires, you'll need to renew it and head back to the bank with your updated visa and passport to reactivate the card.
This makes life so much easier for short-term visitors – no more relying solely on cash or international cards with hefty fees. Whether you're exploring Hanoi’s streets or chilling in Hoi An, having local banking access just got simpler.
Pro tip: Check with major banks like Vietcombank or BIDV for the application process, as requirements might vary slightly.
