I FILED A HOMEOWNERS CLAIM. CAN MY INSURANCE COMPANY DROP ME?

That was the first question I got after asking what insurance topics people wanted to hear about, and it’s a good one.

A lot of homeowners are genuinely afraid to use the insurance they pay for because they think one claim will automatically get them cancelled or nonrenewed.

In Louisiana, it’s not that simple.

There’s a difference between cancellation and nonrenewal, Louisiana law places restrictions on both, and there are some particularly important protections when the claim involves things like wind, hail, hurricanes, and other natural events.

I put together a short article explaining what Louisiana homeowners should know.

If you’ve ever hesitated to file a claim because you were afraid your insurance company would drop you, this is worth reading.
