Happy Valentines Day♥️
🌿 Porch Conversation: The Real Story of St. Valentine
Most people think Valentine’s Day is about flowers and chocolate.
But the real story?
It’s quieter than that.
Stronger than that.
Let me tell you what history whispers about a man named Saint Valentine.
He lived in Rome in the 200s — a time when following Christ could cost you your life. The emperor, Claudius II Gothicus, believed single men made better soldiers. So he outlawed marriage for young men.
Imagine that.
No weddings.
No promises.
No new families beginning.
Valentine was a priest. And he quietly, faithfully continued performing marriages in secret.
Not loudly.
Not rebelliously.
Just faithfully.
Because he believed love — real covenant love — mattered.
Eventually he was arrested.
While in prison, tradition says he befriended the jailer’s daughter. Some stories say he prayed for her healing. Before his ex*****on on February 14th, he left her a note signed:
“From your Valentine.”
That’s the part most people know.
But here’s the part that sits with me on the porch tonight…
He wasn’t trying to create a holiday.
He wasn’t trying to be remembered.
He simply stood for commitment when it wasn’t convenient.
He honored marriage when culture discouraged it.
He chose faithfulness over fear.
And maybe that’s what love really is.
Not grand gestures.
Not social media posts.
But quiet courage.
Daily devotion.
Keeping your word.
On this Valentine’s Day, I’m reminded that love isn’t fragile.
It’s brave.
And sometimes the most powerful love stories aren’t loud at all.
They’re steady.
