Many of you have already heard about Lucas but I wanted to include this article on my page. Our tendency to categorize and think in terms of "us" and "them" can only be eroded when we see images of diversity in our world. Kudos to Ge**er for giving this beautiful child the opportunity to shine.

Martin Luther King, Jr. This Martin Luther King Jr. Day feels especially somber and important as our country continues to be confronted with the issues of racism and power, now from the seat of power at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Do not take your eyes off the fact that there are roads to justice and, as Dr. King said, "Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that."

This is an important advancement in constitutional protections for the LGBTQ community. Of particular note is that the very filing of the lawsuit led to the Legislature ("quietly") repealing an anti-LGBTQ law in that state.

Interesting article on the real-life impact of California’s new law allowing terminally ill patients to request life-ending medication. Ultimately, the law has opened up a dialogue between patients and doctors/hospitals that lead to better management of end-of-life conditions so that, in most cases, the medication option wasn’t necessary. Access to information and clear communication has always been a good thing.

I have worked for 11 years in the area of special education law. I have watched dedicated educators making positive impact and, more recently, I have studied, with interest, the different ways people are speaking about "disability." I am posting this video because I believe it is truthful, has personal value and hope everyone who sees this will watch it.

I grew up in a family with a person with Down's Syndrome. My dad's first cousin, Dee, lived for most of his life with his mother in Oklahoma. (She passed shortly before him.). As a child, but even more so as an adult, I would love being able to visit my Oklahoma family. And I especially loved the chances I had to sit down with Dee and see what was going on in his life. He was everything that this father says about his son. And man, did he give great hugs. Unfortunately, I rarely get to meet the children from the cases on which I work. However, I do get especially excited when given the chance to work on one involving a child with Down's.

The First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution was a phenomenal accomplishment by those breaking away from the British royal monarchy and creating a country based on individual freedoms, rights and potential. From that context, the amendment was intended to prevent the government from interfering with an individual's right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Hate speech, by its very nature, is antithetical to these goals. Other countries around the world, including our neighbors to the north, Canada, have had anti-hate speech laws in place for decades. Over 25 years ago, when I was in law school, the push for anti-hate speech laws in this country was pretty vital. I wonder where those people are now; we need you to come back.

Hello to all my clients, friends and family who have supported me in starting my new law firm. We just hit nine months and things are as busy as ever. My website should FINALLY be up this month and I am exploring taking on my first large pro bono case. Right now the subject matter is hush-hush but if it pans out the issue shouldn't surprise you. I hope that everyone is having as great a summer as this girl - don't forget to enjoy yourselves!
