The man that made it all happen...RIP

Dear FAMU College of Law Students, Faculty, Staff, Alumni and Friends:

The College of Law joins the University in expressing condolences to the family of the late Dr. Frederick S. Humphries, Sr., eighth president of the University and visionary for reestablishing the law school. Dr. Humphries, 85, passed away at his home in Orlando on Thursday, June 24, 2021.

“The FAMU College of Law is one of Dr. Humphries’ greatest legacies,” said Deidré Keller, dean and professor of law. “The College of Law is committed to sustaining that legacy by demonstrating Excellence with Caring across the law school campus.”

Dr. Humphries led the charge to reopen the College of Law after it was closed by the state in 1968. After more than three decades of lobbying by Humphries, FAMU administrators and countless alumni, Florida Gov. Jeb Bush signed legislation authorizing the reestablishing of the FAMU College of Law in 2000. The reestablished FAMU College of Law opened in Orlando in 2002.

Dr. Humphries soon moved to Orlando and occupied an office in the temporary quarters on North Orange Avenue, as well as in the permanent facility on Beggs Avenue. He was a confidant, mentor, and leader who faculty, staff and students respected and adored. In recognition of his committed service to FAMU, the College of Law and higher education in general, one administration of the Student Bar Association commissioned a portrait of Dr. Humphries, which hangs in the law school atrium.
