On August 30, 1967 Thurgood Marshall was confirmed as a justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. Marshall was the first African American to serve on the court. Before becoming a justice, Marshall won 29 of the 32 cases he argued before the Supreme Court, most notably the case Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka in 1954, which ruled school segregation unconstitutional.
