Stepparent adoptions can be some of the happiest cases in court — but they are not always as simple as people think.

In Tennessee, a stepparent adoption usually involves two separate legal steps:

1. Terminating the other biological parent’s rights; and
2. Completing the adoption.

Most people think this:

“If it’s under 50 miles, I can move and there’s nothing they can do about it.”

That’s not how it works.

I’ve seen situations where a parent moves less than 50 miles… and still ends up right back in court fighting over custody.

Why?

Because it’s not just about distance.

It’s about how that move affects:

The parenting schedule
School routines
The child’s relationship with the other parent

And if that gets disrupted, you can be looking at a full modification case.

On the flip side—if it’s over 50 miles or out of state, there’s a very specific legal process you have to follow.

Miss a step, and it can blow up fast.
