A little time spent learning today can bring greater clarity for the road ahead.

Planning for the future often comes with questions. How can I protect what I’ve worked hard to build? Is my estate plan prepared for what lies ahead? What should my family know about long-term care?

You don’t have to have all the answers before you begin. Sometimes, the best first step is simply creating space to learn, ask questions, and better understand your options.

This September, we invite you to join us for one or more of our FREE educational webinars, where we’ll explore important topics with practical guidance and the relational approach that is at the heart of how we serve.

Do Trusts go through probate?

Generally, assets properly transferred to a living trust pass outside the probate process.

But simply creating a trust does not automatically keep every asset out of probate. Assets that are not properly transferred to the trust may still need to go through probate, depending on how they are owned and whether another beneficiary arrangement applies.

That’s why the details of an estate plan, and how your assets are coordinated with that plan, matter.

Meet the People Who Walk With You Through Life’s Planning

This week, we’re featuring Stefania Essien, one of the friendly faces welcoming clients to our Ashburn office.

As our Administrative Assistant and Ashburn Receptionist, Stefania helps keep the Ashburn office running smoothly while supporting scheduling, client communication, document collection, proofreading, and many of the day-to-day details that help our team serve families well.

Since joining Relational Estate & Elder Law, she has quickly become someone our team can count on. Her proactive approach, attention to detail, and willingness to lend a hand have already made a meaningful difference.

But there's more to Stefania than keeping things organized. Outside of work, she enjoys cooking, hiking, and spending time with her loved ones. And if there's a waterfall at the end of a hike, you can bet she is there!

We're grateful to have Stefania as part of our team, and for the warmth and thoughtfulness she brings to each client and team interaction.

ICYMI: A great afternoon at Arbor Terrace Herndon!

Last week, Samantha Vandeberg, Paralegal & Intake Lead, and Heather Martin, Esq., Estate Planning Attorney, had the opportunity to join the Arbor Terrace Herndon Vendor Fair and spend some time getting to know residents, families, and other professionals in the community.

Events like this give us a chance to have conversations we may not otherwise have, learn more about the people and organizations serving our community, and simply get to know one another. That relationship-building is an important part of who we are at Relational Estate & Elder Law.

We especially enjoyed connecting with the Arbor Terrace Herndon team and others who care deeply about helping older adults and their families navigate the future with confidence and peace of mind.

Thank you to Arbor Terrace Herndon for inviting us and making us feel so welcome. We’re grateful for the conversations, the new connections, and the opportunity to spend the afternoon with your community!

What happens to the things you’ve spent a lifetime building when you’re no longer here to make the decisions?

A Will is more than a legal document. It’s a way to make your wishes known, care for the people you love, and help your family navigate an already difficult time with greater clarity and peace of mind.

This National Make-A-Will Month, we’re answering a simple but important question: What is a Will, and why does it matter?

Planning for the future isn’t about expecting the worst. It’s about taking the time now to make things a little easier for the people you care about later.

Take a few minutes to watch, and if you’ve been putting off creating or updating your Will, let this be your reminder to take that first step.

Meet the People Who Walk With You Through Life’s Planning

This week, we're excited to introduce Bernie Snyder, our Remote Receptionist and Legal Assistant.

With a background in pastoral counseling and years spent caring for her parents, Bernie understands that every conversation carries a story. Whether she's welcoming a new client over the phone, proofreading legal documents, or helping keep communication running smoothly behind the scenes, she brings kindness, patience, and genuine compassion to everything she does.

Outside of work, Bernie finds joy in noticing the beauty in everyday life. She loves exploring historic towns with her camera, capturing quiet moments through street photography, cooking for the people she loves, quilting, and spending time with her two rescue cats, Dandy and Carmen. She believes that every person, every place, and every story has something meaningful worth discovering; a perspective that naturally carries into the way she cares for others.

One thought that beautifully reflects Bernie's heart:

"Everyone has a story worth hearing, and sometimes the greatest gift we can give is simply taking the time to listen."

We're grateful to have Bernie as part of the Relational Estate & Elder Law family, and for the warmth, empathy, and thoughtful care she shares with our clients and team every day.
