In North Carolina, a standard will must be signed by the testator and witnessed by at least two people who are present at the same time, and those witnesses generally should not be beneficiaries.

Holographic wills, which are entirely handwritten and signed by the testator, are also recognized under NC law but come with their own requirements.

The specifics matter, and a will that doesn't meet them may not hold up in court when it needs to most.

A will tells the court how you want your assets distributed after you pass. 📋 An estate plan does that and much more. It can include powers of attorney for finances and healthcare, advance directives, beneficiary designations, and, in some cases, a trust can help your family avoid probate entirely. Relying on a will alone leaves a lot of important decisions unaddressed.

If you only have a will, it's worth understanding what else your plan might be missing. We're here to help.

Your life has changed since you signed those documents. Maybe significantly.

A document review with Leger Law takes a clear look at your existing will, trust, power of attorney, and other estate planning documents to make sure they still reflect where you are today, not where you were three or five years ago. And for clients whose documents we created, that review is complimentary every three years for life. 💯

An advance directive, sometimes called a living will, puts your healthcare wishes in writing so that if you're ever unable to communicate them yourself, your doctors and family know exactly what you want. ⚖️ It covers decisions about life-sustaining treatment, resuscitation, artificial nutrition, and other critical medical choices that no one wants to make in a crisis without guidance. Without one, those decisions fall to whoever is present, under enormous pressure, with no way to know what you would have chosen.

At Leger Law, we've built our practice around making the process as clear and comfortable as possible. Nick takes the time to explain everything in plain language, answer every question, and make sure you leave with a plan that genuinely reflects your wishes. That's not a philosophy we talk about; it's how every single client meeting runs. If you've been putting this off, we'd love to change that.
