Back in the day when long-distance travel took place by sea, magnetic compasses weren’t too reliable, at times causing ships to miss their targets by miles. Countless adaptations meant that little by little, the accuracy of compass readings increased.

One such improvement, the "Azimuth attachment to compasses”, was patented by William Thaxter in 1885. His invention helped sailors distinguish between the compasses’ "magnetic North" (which changes depending on your location), and the "true North", which is the geographic North Pole.

This let them adjust their magnetic compasses accordingly, hopefully leading to fewer missed destinations! ⚓
