I am appalled that a government system that is supposed to be there for disabled workers is a completely failing those with the highest need.
I have several clients that I have assisted with appeals up and through the federal court system fighting for years to obtain their earned disability benefits. After a long and arduous battle over several years they were finally approved and found disabled. However, the Social Security Administration is currently taking over 2 years to process and pay the benefits awarded. I was told today by the Social Security payment center that in cases where the benefits were approved after a court appeal, they are just working on claims where the decision awarding benefits was made in 2023!!!
To put this in perspective. Let me give you one client's situation. I have a very sick client who has not been able to work since March, 2018. Her claim for disability benefits was denied and ultimately had to be appealed to Federal Court. The appeal was successful and she was finally found disabled as of March, 2018 by a decision dated December, 2024. To date, she has not received any benefits whatsoever from SSA and I have not received payment for the work that I performed. She has been waiting since March, 2018 with no income and I have to tell her she may not receive anything from the Social Security Administration until some time in 2026.
If an individual files for Social Security Disability and is approved a benefit without the need for a court appeal, that individual generally gets paid within 6-8 weeks of the favorable determination. But individuals who have had to fight in court to obtain the benefits they deserve have to wait an additional two years before being paid what they have been awarded. The representative that I spoke with today stated to me that she hopes they will hire more people to help with processing the benefit payments.
I have completely lost faith that anyone in the current administration cares about the well-being of its citizens. All I can do is to try telling my clients to reach out to their local representatives to let them know this is the situation.
