AS A SUMMARY - Virginia has passed temporary new workplace safety rules designed to protect employees from the coronavirus, becoming the first state to adopt such measures that include social distancing requirements, notifications for employees when a co-worker has tested positive for the virus and timelines for when employees who recover from the virus can return to work.

The new rules will require regular cleanings of high-contact surfaces and mandate that all businesses impose social distancing measures. Masks are required for employees who interact with customers and when social distancing measures can’t be maintained. And employers must provide easy access to hand sanitizer or a hand washing station.
