White Swan Community Coalition

White Swan Community Coalition The goal of the White Swan Community Coalition is to live out the vision by honoring the voices of the community and by being advocates for community

The White Swan Community Coalition is the voice of White Swan. We are community members from all walks of life that stand together for a healthy a safe community for all. As a group we are working to improve life for everyone. This means that we are working to fight poverty, postpone drug and alcohol use by minors until they are old enough to make a health decision on their own. We also work to ke

ep our kids in school so that they have an opportunity to go further than we ever have. To reach these goals we have to face many obstacles and face them carefully. We are not out to judge anyone but we do have to face community problems like drug use, gang activity, and poverty. We feel that as a group we can face these issues in a manor that reflects the sensitivity of each situation. We work with many different groups such as the Yakama Tribal Police, Washington State Patrol, Yakima Sheriff's Office, White Swan Methodist Church, St. Mary's Catholic Church, Harrah Assembly of God, VetCorps, DBHS, CADCA, and many many more. We are always looking to add more groups so that everyone is represented in supporting our community. We also work with individuals who have individual problems. We want people to come and help make White Swan better then we have ever imagined. As a member of the White Swan Community you are able to attend White Swan Community Coalition meetings and help shape what happens here. Each person that attends has a hand in changes that are made. At this time the WSCC and White Swan Arts and Recreation Committee (WSARC) have worked on programs that directly affect our youth such as the White Swan Dream Makers; who have been working to decrease suicide and increase healthy choices amongst our youth. PAX (Peace productivity happiness health) is another program that has been brought to our youth from people working hard to make improvements here. Most of our community events come through the WSARC and the WSCC; these include Spring and Summer Jam, parades, and other community functions. You have the ability to take part in this improvement and could be part of great things that will forever improve the life of out youth. You can be one of the people that help build the White Swan Park or saves a young person from hardships.

Did you know alcohol use is the third leading preventable cause of cancer in the U.S.? It increases the risk of at least seven types of cancer, including breast, liver, and throat cancer—even at low levels of drinking. Talk to your teen about the serious health risks of alcohol. You can help them make choices that protect their future. Learn more at https://starttalkingnow.org/parents/every-conversation-counts.

You are the most powerful influence in your child's life. More than friends. More than TV. More than celebrities. And that's why it's important that they hear from you about not using ma*****na or alcohol and finding healthy ways to cope during difficult times.

Teen drinking can be hard to spot, but as a parent or caregiver, you know your child best. If something feels off, trust your instincts and check in. Look beyond the obvious—changes in mood, sleep, or friends can be signs that something’s going on. You don’t have to have all the answers—just being there can be enough. Teens who feel supported by their parents are less likely to drink.

How easy is it for a middle school student to get alcohol in our community?

That’s one of the questions on our quick, 5-minute community survey—and we need your voice!

Each year, our coalition receives $185,000 to help prevent youth substance use and promote mental health in our community. To keep this funding—and continue supporting events like our annual Gathering of Native Americans (GONA), Spring Carnival, and Summer Jam—we need at least 150 community members to complete the survey.

Yesterday, coalition member Joshua and coordinator Julie had the opportunity to meet with Senator King in Yakima to talk about an important issue in our community—limiting youth access to retail alcohol in White Swan.

We had a great conversation and appreciated the chance to share what we’re seeing locally and the steps we’re taking to support our young people.

It was a successful meeting, and we’re looking forward to continuing this partnership as we work together to create a healthier, safer community for our youth.

🚨 PUBLIC HEALTH ALERT

Carfentanil - an extremely potent opioid - has recently been identified in Washington State. Carfentanil is estimated to be 100 times stronger than fentanyl and 10,000 times stronger than morphine, meaning even a very small amount can cause a fatal overdose.

If you or someone you know uses opioids, please take steps to reduce risk:
- Never use alone
- Use the Never Use Alone Hotline: 800-484-3731
- Use with someone nearby who can respond
- Carry Naloxone (Narcan) if available

Overdose can happen quickly, but help is available and treatment works. Recovery is possible, and support is available in our community.

Please share this message to help keep our community informed and safe.
