Florida homeowners may soon have a big decision to make regarding HJR 1, the “Save Our Homes from Excessive Property Taxes” amendment, which the Florida Legislature passed on June 2. The proposal would increase Florida’s homestead exemption from $50,000 to $150,000 in 2027, and to $250,000 in 2028, potentially saving many homeowners hundreds or even thousands of dollars each year on their property tax bills. That’s welcome news for families already juggling rising insurance costs, groceries, and just about everything else! Of course, the big question then is: How will local governments make up the lost revenue for services like roads, parks, police, and fire protection? Florida voters will need to weigh the pros and cons this November to determine the outcome. Lots to consider….
