Yesterday, Gov. Holcomb signed HB 1296, allowing individuals in the state of Indiana to carry a handgun without a license. If you have questions about this, ask us or another lawyer. As you can imagine, there are quite a few people who are mistaken about the law and are eagerly sharing their wrong opinions online.
The nuts and bolts about this are pretty simple. The law takes effect July 1st. Until then, it will still be a misdemeanor to carry a handgun without a license and a felony for a second offense. If you currently have an LTCH, it will remain valid and you do not need to take any action as a result of this law.
This only applies to Indiana and you may need a license to carry in another state if that state is not one of the 24 states that have adopted a constitutional carry law. You would need a license to carry in Michigan, but not Ohio or Kentucky. Indiana LTCH holders may not carry a handgun in Illinois and this law does not change that.
If you are prohibited from possessing a firearm by state or federal law, you may not possess any firearm and you may not carry a handgun as a result of this law. However, we specialize in restoring civil rights, including firearm rights. Send us a message if you'd like to discuss your eligibility.
