FYI:

The Rhode Island General Assembly voted to approve Article 12 of the state budget which will increase the real estate conveyance tax by 15% from $2 per $500 to $2.30 of the purchase price of real estate. The increase will apply to deeds that are recorded on or after July 1, 2014 if Governor Chafee signs the budget.

This tax, which is customarily paid by the seller, was last raised in 2004. The new rate is slightly higher than the Massachusetts conveyance tax, which is $4.56 per $1,000 of the sales price.

The original legislation, which the Rhode Island Association of REALTORS opposed, would have increased the tax by 25%.

The entire .30 increase will be placed in a restricted receipt fund to be administered by the RI Housing Resources Commission for rental assistance, homeless prevention, housing retention, and lead abatement.
