Iowa has recently legalized the sale and use of certain fireworks. The increased use of fireworks by amateurs may lead to an increase in mishaps. I have personally handled a legal case involving people who were injured by fireworks debris falling from a great height and hitting them. Property can be damaged in the same way.

If something similar would happen to you or someone you know, the most important thing is, of course, to get medical attention immediately. Beyond that, you need to do everything you can to preserve any fireworks debris (especially the debris that hit you or your property) and make sure to get the names of anyone who may have seen what happened. Finally, you need to do everything you can as quickly as you can to identify the person or business who launched the fireworks.

Professional fireworks companies should have business liability insurance that may cover any damages caused by them and individuals may also have homeowners insurance that will do the same.
