We recently spent some time reviewing the DSM Small Business Jobs Report by the Greater Des Moines Partnership, and one thing stood out immediately: THE MOMENTUM IS REAL!!

Nearly 10,000 new jobs were created by small businesses in 2023, new business formation is at its highest level in a decade, and the Des Moines metro continues to outpace the national average in employment growth.

Even more encouraging, that growth spans multiple industries, including professional services, healthcare, and construction. Entrepreneurship is also on the rise, creating a strong pipeline of new businesses entering the market.

For us at Vázquez Law Office, it's also an exciting reminder of why we do what we do. Every new business represents an entrepreneur taking a chance. Those businesses need trusted legal guidance as they launch, grow, hire employees, negotiate contracts, and navigate challenges along the way. Hats off to all of you powerhouses fueling our local economy and growth! Keep up the great work!

This month, we were excited to welcome Sam Welchance, SHRM-CP to Vázquez Law Office as our Inaugural Summer Associate.

Sam joins us after completing his first year at Drake University Law School, bringing sharp academics, radiating kindness, and demonstrating a strong work ethic and genuine eagerness to learn. From day one, he has shown himself to be exactly the kind of thoughtful, curious, community‑minded advocacy we hoped to invest in.

This internship is also meaningful for another reason. It is the first and most meaningful moment for our commitments to the communities we are a part of to take shape.

When we launched Vázquez Law Office, one of our earliest commitments was to participate in The Iowa State Bar Association Cady Internship & Scholarship Program, a program historically dedicated to championing diversity, developing local talent, and strengthening Iowa’s legal and business communities. Welcoming Sam is one of the ways we’re putting those words into action.

Sam has already hit the ground running! And has many more exciting moments in store.

In his first week alone, Sam has:
• Participated in client meetings and intake calls.
• Assisted with client communications during stressful, time‑sensitive situations.
• Conducted legal research and drafted work product and honed his emotional intelligence when communicating with clients.
• Helped compile facts and exhibits for settlement discussions.
• Joined strategy conversations across business litigation and advisory matters.
• Completed time‑entry training and started tracking and inputting his time in compliance with ABA standards.

This summer, Sam will continue gaining hands‑on experience across legal research, writing, operations, and community engagement, including participating in internship programs through the West Des Moines Chamber of Commerce and the Greater Des Moines Partnership.

Most importantly, we’re excited to invest in Sam’s growth as a future attorney. We believe real learning happens through meaningful responsibility, mentorship, and exposure to the real work of serving clients with care and clarity. We take the responsibility of many firsts for Sam's legal career very seriously and strive to make those firsts intentional and positive so he will thrive in those areas as he develops as an attorney.

Sam is already rising to the moment. Welcome to the team, Sam!

We’re glad you’re here and proud to be part of your journey.

One of the hardest parts of litigation isn't just the legal process, it's the stress, uncertainty, and emotional toll that come with it.

Today, we stopped by to check in on a few clients who are facing litigation. We brought a few "emotional support pals" to brighten their day and remind them they're not facing this alone.

As attorneys, our job is to advocate for our clients, but it's also to support them through what is often one of the most difficult chapters of their lives. A lawsuit can feel overwhelming, and sometimes a small gesture of kindness can make a meaningful difference.

We're grateful for the trust our clients place in us, and we're committed to standing beside them every step of the way.

Last week, our Founder, Gabrielle Vázquez, was honored to receive the Inspiring Women of Iowa Character Award and had the opportunity to speak in front of more than 800 attendees.

At Vazquez Law Office, we believe leadership is rooted in integrity, service, resilience, and the way we show up for others, especially in the moments no one sees. This recognition reflects the kind of character-driven and people-first leadership Gabrielle brings to our team, clients, and community every day.

We are incredibly proud to celebrate this achievement and grateful for the mentors, leaders, organizations, and community members who continue to create opportunities that uplift and empower others.

A special thank you to the organizations and individuals who support this initiative year after year, including Girl Scouts of Greater Iowa, Lincoln Savings Bank, Jill Trobaugh, Derek Trobaugh, Beth Shelton, The Noll Wilson Group, Ivory House Photography, and Melissa Merrifield for the thoughtful nomination and support.

Congratulations, Gabrielle — and thank you for leading with integrity, compassion, and purpose.

Last year, I walked into the Athene Beyond Boundaries Business Summit as an entrepreneurial hopeful, pondering the possibility of starting my own law firm. This year, I walked in with my own law firm and two awesome members of my team at my side: Trisha Hanson and Jordan Ask.

Twelve months ago, I was thinking about starting my firm. It was a seed of an idea, but one I had been preparing for and nurturing for decades. I walked into that conference last year and left in awe of the business owners and the community supporting them. I wondered how I fit in, how could I support these exciting efforts. I collected endless motivation, inspiration, strategy, and connections. I remember sitting in those sessions wondering what it would take to grow something real, sustainable, and rooted in service.

Coming back this year as a business owner with a team changed everything.

I experienced the summit not just as an attorney, but as a founder responsible for people, culture, and long‑term strategy.

Reggie Love opened day one with a message that hit differently: it's the people that matter most.

I then had the privilege of speaking on the legal panel "Protect Your Genius: Trademarks, Contracts, and Legal Must‑Knows for Entrepreneurs." My message there was simple: "Protect what you’re building while things are going well." Strong contracts and clear communication aren’t reactive tools, they’re foundations, and they avoid costly problems that threaten your business and your livelihood down the line.

Coach Carter closed the summit with reminders that leadership is about seeing the greatness in people and choosing hard work as a skill, not a circumstance.

Standing there with my team, a team that didn’t exist last year, was the real full‑circle moment. We’re building something intentional, something grounded, something that will last. And we're doing it with the support of the communities we serve.

I am grateful to Chase for bringing my staff to join me, to the West Des Moines Chamber of Commerce for hosting and putting me on that panel, and to all of the businesses and community members who attended, shared, and sponsored. THANK YOU!!

I am proud of our team and the work we’re doing to build Vázquez Law Office to provide the business legal services our business communities need.

Inspiring Women of Iowa Character Award Finalist: Gabrielle Vázquez
Founder, Vázquez Law Office

“Gabrielle Vázquez exemplifies the very essence of courage, confidence, and character. As a first-generation attorney and entrepreneur, she has turned every challenge into an opportunity—not only to advance her own career but to open doors for others. Her story is one of grit, grace, and bold leadership, inspiring countless women and girls to see that barriers are not stop signs, but stepping stones. Gabrielle’s journey began with the courage to build something from the ground up. Launching Vázquez Law Firm in both Iowa and New York, she defied the odds of a saturated industry by combining legal precision with human-centered advocacy. When most would plan a nine-month timeline, Gabrielle compressed it into five, and then into a remarkable six-week sprint—because when vision meets action, she doesn’t wait for perfect conditions. In just three months, she built a thriving law practice that stands as a symbol of what’s possible when passion and purpose align. Her confidence radiates not from titles or recognition, but from the quiet assurance that she is creating meaningful impact. She approaches the law not as a transaction but as transformation—helping families, entrepreneurs, and community members find clarity in their most difficult moments. Whether she’s in the courtroom, mentoring a young attorney, or speaking to students about pursuing justice, Gabrielle leads by example. She challenges the notion that women must choose between strength and compassion; she embodies both every single day. Gabrielle’s character is defined by service. She has mentored emerging female leaders through professional associations, volunteered her legal expertise to those who could not afford representation, and consistently advocates for equity in access to justice. Her work bridges communities—connecting her Iowa roots with her New York expansion, symbolizing that success is not about where you start, but how you rise and bring others with you. As a collaborator and innovator, Gabrielle empowers women to believe that their ideas are worthy of ex*****on, not hesitation. She has partnered with other women-owned businesses to create shared opportunities and elevate visibility for female professionals across industries. Her partnership philosophy— “we rise by building together”—is more than a slogan; it’s a movement she lives daily. In an era that demands authentic leadership, Gabrielle stands out not only for her accomplishments but for her integrity and resilience. She represents what it means to lead with courage—to step into uncertainty and create structure where none exists. She models confidence—not as perfection, but as presence. And she embodies character—not as performance, but as consistency in doing what’s right, even when it’s not easy. Gabrielle Vázquez is more than a successful attorney; she is a beacon for women who are redefining leadership, courage, and confidence on their own terms.”

Stay tuned for her podcast episode later today with The Noll Wilson Group.

Business law is not transactional; it is relational.

THAT is why we focus on business strategy, not just tasks. A purely transactional relationship between attorney and client is like missing the forest for the trees.

Businesses are complex ecosystems shaped by people, values, risk tolerance, and long‑term goals. Effective legal strategy requires understanding all of that, not just executing isolated tasks.

THAT is why our approach emphasizes:
👉 Big‑picture planning
👉 Cross‑functional thinking
👉 Legal solutions designed for real‑world business impact

When your attorney understands the whole business, the result isn’t just compliance, it’s confidence.
