After months of advocacy and media coverage, improperly placed rumble strips along A1A in Indian River County have been removed and replaced—restoring safe, rideable space for people on bicycles. It’s an important improvement and a clear example of how coordinated advocacy and responsive agency staff can drive meaningful change.

We thank the Florida Department of Transportation for addressing concerns raised by the Florida Bicycle Association and multiple bike-advocacy groups, notably Bike Walk Indian River County and the Vero Cycling Club—both members of the Florida Bicycle Association. We also appreciate the continued media attention from WPTV, Vero News, and others.

While this fix is worth celebrating, our work isn’t done. We continue urging FDOT to address dangerous rumble strip placements elsewhere and to refine their design statewide. Rumble strips can help prevent crashes, but must be thoughtfully placed. We’re also advocating for better maintenance to ensure at least four feet of clear, rideable space in bike lanes—key to creating smoother, safer roads for everyone.

The issue is that Atlantic Avenue often turns into a cluster of beachgoers, diners, and shoppers all funneling down one road, so we're breaking down the possible changes to lanes, routes, and even traffic lights to help alleviate some of this congestion.

The off-season typically brings a lull to stores and restaurants, destinations like Atlantic Avenue in Delray Beach continue to experience heavy foot and vehicle traffic year-round.
