Last Friday I got the chance to participate in The Justice Cup golf tournament put on by the Iowa Association for Justice. It was a great time for a great cause.

Directly on point.

The concept of worker’s compensation did not originate in the United States, it arose in Germany in the second half of the 19th century under the leadership of Prussian Chancellor

It is a shame when elected officials forget that they are supposed to be acting on behalf of the Iowans who elected them and not themselves.

An Iowa citizen jury should have the right to hold wrongdoers accountable when they hurt our loved ones or us. This right is under attack, and Iowans are using their voice to speak out.

On February 13, 2016, hours after Justice Antonin Scalia died, Senator Chuck Grassley joined Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell in pledging not to give a formal hearing to any Supreme Court nominee put forth by the president. “It only makes sense that we defer to the American people who will elect a new president to select the next Supreme Court Justice.”

When did what "makes sense" stop making sense? Years ago, I voted for Grassley along with Harkin because I thought balanced representation in the Senate best suited Iowa. Seeing his hypocrisy saddens me.

I have had a number of people ask me whether you can pursue a workers' compensation claim if you contract COVID-19 due to a workplace exposure. The simple answer to that question is "yes." Contracting COVID-19, or any other communicable disease, at work is a basis for pursuing a workers' compensation claim. Fortunately, most people who are unfortunate enough to have the virus are able to recover without much in the way of complications. However, many aren't as fortunate and end up with long term complications or death. For those people and their families, our workers' compensation system exists as a safety net to help make up for some of the losses they experience. This is a valuable resource that should not be overlooked simply because it doesn't sound like a typical workplace injury claim.

My friends at Iowa Justice put together this thoughtful reminder of how important of a privilege and a right it is to be able to serve on a jury.

Congratulations to my long time partner and friend, Martin Ozga, on his well deserved retirement. Today will be his last full day with Neifert, Byrne & Ozga (though he will still remain in "of counsel" status). You will be missed greatly.

As you head out to cast your votes in this election, please make sure you understand how the people you are supporting have voted on matters that really matter to you. I cannot tell you how frustrating it is for me to have a lengthy discussion with a client about how the legislature took away many of their workplace rights in 2017 and then have them drive away with a bumper sticker on their car supporting a candidate who did part of the damage. Don't let party affiliations lead you to support a candidate who has already hurt you several times before and will not hesitate to do it again.

And for those of you who feel so fed up with all of the negative ads and blustering that you are considering not voting: Reconsider. Vote. It is a privilege that many in this world do not share. And it is the most powerful means that we have to participate in a process that affects all of our lives daily.
