💙 SPECIAL NEEDS SAFETY INITIATIVE 💙

The Springdale Police Department is excited to introduce our Child with Additional Needs vehicle and home window decals! 🚔🏠

These decals are designed to give law enforcement officers, firefighters, EMS personnel, and other first responders an early indication that an individual with additional needs may be inside a vehicle or located in a home. 🚨

Every person with additional needs is different. Some individuals may have sensory sensitivities, difficulty communicating, or unique responses to unfamiliar or stressful situations. 💙

Having this information ahead of time can help first responders better understand the circumstances and respond with patience, awareness, and compassion. 🤝

Our hope is that these decals will serve as a simple but meaningful tool to help improve safety and encourage positive interactions between individuals with additional needs, their families, and first responders. 💙

Drive Sober This Labor Day, and Every Day!

Labor Day Stats:

* During the 2024 Labor Day holiday (6 p.m. September 1 - 5:59
a.m. September 5), there were 505 crash fatalities nationwide.
- 70 were killed in crashes that involved at least one
alcohol-impaired driver with a blood alcohol
concentration (BAC) of .08 or above.
* Over the 2023 Labor Day holiday, 505 drivers were killed in
traffic crashes.
- 100 drivers were alcohol-impaired with a BAC of .08 or
above.
- 77 of the 100 impaired drivers killed were almost
twice the legal limit (BAC .15+).
* Among drivers between the ages of 18 and 34 who were killed
in crashes over the Labor Day holiday in 2024, 40% of those
drivers were drunk, with BACs of .08 or above.

Have a Plan Whether You're Driving, Riding, or Hosting:

* Before drinking, plan a safe and sober ride home.
* Don’t let someone get behind the wheel if they've been
drinking.
* If you’re hosting a gathering, make sure all your guests have a
sober ride home.
* If you see an impaired driver, call 911. And always wear your
seat belt — it’s your best defense against impaired drivers.

Lexington County deputy dies during dive team training

LEXINGTON, S.C. – A member of the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department’s dive team died Thursday during an underwater training session on Lake Murray.

Jillian Olson, 29, began her career as a Lexington County deputy in 2021. After more than a year as a patrol deputy, she transferred to a warrant deputy position. Olson was promoted to master deputy in the Warrant Division in 2025. She has been a member of the LCSD dive team since 2024.

“Our hearts are broken by the loss of a valuable member of the Sheriff’s Department,” Lexington County Sheriff Jay Koon said. “Jillian exemplified commitment and service. She faithfully carried out her duties and selflessly worked to make those around her better.”

The Lexington County Sheriff’s Foundation named Olson the outstanding judicial services deputy of the year at its annual awards banquet last spring, according to Koon.

“The foundation recognized Jillian for showing exceptional initiative and leadership by, on her own time, developing reference guides and document templates for use by judicial services deputies,” Koon said. “The tools Jillian developed improved deputy training and operational workflow.”

Olson, a resident of Lexington, received the Sheriff’s Department’s tactical operations support award in 2023. She was scheduled to receive the department’s five-year honorable service award next month.

A native of Illinois, Olson graduated from Western Illinois University in 2019 with a bachelor’s degree in law enforcement and justice administration. She completed a master’s degree in student personnel services from the institution in 2021.

“Jillian’s dedication to her community and department is well-documented with awards and recognitions,” Koon said. “She’ll be most remembered for what she did with no fanfare. Her decision to join our dive team is just one example of her going above and beyond.”

The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources is leading the investigation into Olson's death, with assistance from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division. The Lexington County Coroner's Office is conducting its own investigation to determine Olson's cause and manner of death.

"I am grateful to DNR, SLED and our county coroner for the sensitive and respectful way they've handled everything," Koon said. "I would also like to express my thanks to the countless public safety agencies that responded without hesitation from across the whole state to help us in our time of need."

We love to celebrate the 4th of July with family, friends, food, and fireworks. And yet, all too often, the festivities turn tragic on our nation's roads. This American holiday is also one of the deadliest holidays of the year due to drunk-driving crashes.
Fourth of July Stats
• From 2020 to 2024, there were 2,719 total traffic fatalities during this holiday period, and 1,724 drivers were killed.
• In 2024 alone, there were 579 people killed in traffic crashes during the Fourth of July holiday period.
• Of the drivers involved in impaired driving fatal collisions during the year 2024, 22% of males were drunk compared to 16% of females.
• 38% (654) of those drivers were drunk. Of the 1,724 drivers killed, the 21-34 age group had the highest percentage (47%) of drunk drivers.
