What can an 1854 estate file reveal about Chester County's landscape?
When Lower Oxford Township farmer, John Chambers, died in March 1854, his estate records documented more than his property, possessions, and family history. A draft of his land identifies the location of the mansion house, streams, woodlands, and even specifies the types of trees growing on the property. Unexpectedly, it preserves a snapshot of Chester County's natural landscape from more than 170 years ago.
