There’s often a stigma associated with criminal defense lawyers: “you let bad guys go free.” That phrase has bothered me since law school and partly why I chose this field of law. It couldn’t be further from the truth.

In Michigan, the majority of criminal cases are resolved through plea agreements rather than going to trial. Did you know less than 3% of criminal cases in Michigan were resolved through court verdicts (trials)?

The vast majority were resolved via guilty pleas, where people take accountability for their actions, or dismissals, where people are actually innocent.

Pictured here is my client, NC, who had been suffering from personal issues that gave rise to serious felony charges. When he hired me, he wanted to plead guilty as charged. But after working together, I identified what led him to this position, what he needed to resolve those issues, and how we could protect him going forward.

We negotiated a resolution whereby he took responsibility, but avoided the following:
✅Felony record
✅Jail or prison
✅Criminal record

Instead, we found him resources for therapy, counseling, rehabilitation. We provided him the tools he never had before to improve his life. He has since found stable housing, a new job he’s proud of, and has a newfound relationship with his family.

ALL CHARGES DISMISSED.

Part 1 in what was a Banner Week for Zayid Law. My client, JW, is a 21 year old full time student and full time electrical apprentice. While riding a bicycle home, he was tackled, seized, searched and arrested on multiple felonies. In the blink of an eye, he was facing years in prison.

To justify the stop, Detroit police relied on a never-used statute that requires a headlight on a BICYCLE 30 minutes after sunset. Have you ever heard of that? Me either.

So I studied the s**t out of this law. Word for word. And in my preparation I found my attack angle. When i cross examined the officer, I lulled him into a trap of admitting that my client was observed on the sidewalk, and he never left the sidewalk.

The officer, and prosecuting attorney, either never read the statute or overlooked one key phrase: “on a public roadway.” I argued that DPD had no grounds to stop my client based on the statute because he was riding on the sidewalk, not the public roadway. With everyone in disbelief, the judge ruled: CASE DISMISSED.

Mark Z is the heartbeat of the Z family and is the mastermind behind Zayid Law. His approach to family and business is the same: fierce loyalty, relentless effort, and unquestionable integrity.

He has an innate ability to see the best version of you, even when you don’t see it in yourself. But even more, he makes you believe it and set expectations to achieve it. And when you do, he’s the first to celebrate your success as if it’s his own.

He has helped Zayid Law grow from a solo attorney working in an office closet (true story, more on this in another post) to multiple offices, multiple staff, and even a billboard!

We joke that Mark Z is turning 42 for the 8th year in a row. Truth is, he looks better than he did at 42, and he’s lived enough life for 84.

Every day I spend with him makes me a better person. I hope I get a million more of them ❤️.

CASE DISMISSED.

This was a big one. I pride myself on representing good people in bad situations. My client was visiting a family member and had too much to drink. He was conscious of the safety of others and decided to sleep it off in his car for the night as opposed to driving while intoxicated. His car remained off, keys out of ignition, with no intent to drive.
