While I disagree with aspects of this article, this is a good overview of the changes that recently went into effect in Washington for estate taxes.

For the VAST majority of folks, these changes will be positive; however, for individuals and families with net worths over the new $3 million exemption amount, careful planning is all the more necessary.

This is an interesting development for small business owners:

New businesses are temporarily not required to file beneficial ownership reports under the Corporate Transparency Act. A Federal Judge in Texas placed an injunction on the requirement nationwide. These deadlines were coming up for a number of business owners. While this injunction is not the final word on the matter, it is a major development.

While this change makes the life of a small business owner a little easier (one less report to file!), I do worry about the implications on money laundering: the US may soon be THE major center of money laundering if we don't take similar steps in the future.

A federal judge in Texas has issued a nationwide injunction blocking the enforcement of an anti-money laundering law that requires corporate entities to disclose to the U.S. Treasury Department the identities of their real beneficial owners.

In observance of Thanksgiving (and a poorly-timed Covid infection), Crestview Law will be closed November 25 through December 2. I still am checking voicemail and email, but definitely not seeing clients during this time.

Today involved a quick trip to Waterville to submit some documents with the county.

There’s something special about small-town courthouses—or maybe I’ve just read too many John Grisham novels! Either way, Douglas County has a beautiful courthouse that makes an occasional trip worth it.
