Happy Ruthie Day! Yesterday we honored Ruthie’s birthday as a day to remember all the wonderful ways she influenced our lives and for those generations to come. We know we have been quiet 🤫, but what we have been doing is fulfilling the credo that she instilled in us: that as long as you work hard and want something badly enough, you can achieve it! In July, we opened up a women’s clothing store in NYC called Shari tata, which was Ruthie’s nickname for her youngest daughter. The store features beautifully made clothing designed and sewn by Shari and her team. Ruthie would be tickled pink to see the creative talents, that she nurtured, come to life in her favorite city! 🏙 Even more so, Ruthie would be proud to know that this is a family affair with granddaughter Morgan running the business end of things. Dementia of a loved one can be so difficult, but always remember your loved one is always with you. 💕

It is National Pet Day today, a holiday we hold so dear! In total, our family has 3 pets, a yorkie and two chihuahuas, one of which we inherited from Grandma Ruthie at the time she moved into her first assisted living facility. Pets are so amazing and can offer so much love and companionship but can also require a lot of attention and care. So, what do you do when your loved one, who suffers from dementia, can no longer give sufficient care to their pet(s)? Tonight is the Oscars and what’s better than hosting an Oscar-themed party? Take your loved one to Hollywood and immerse them in a night of glamour by watching the Red Carpet Show at 6:30 pm EST. on ABC to see the most talked-about dresses of 2022 and then to watch the ceremony that honors the best films from 2021!

Need some tips on how to host a great Oscar party? First, make sure your loved one is in their best attire! Second, secure a red rug or towel and have your loved one walk down the carpet. Third, either prepare or order-in delicious appetizers and dinner. Fourth, decorate the room with gold balloons and party favors! Fifth, print out oscar ballots for you and your loved one to fill out and predict the Oscar winners. Sixth, make a toast with champagne or sparkling cider! Seventh, pop the popcorn and enjoy the show!

There is nothing more important than having your loved one maintain their identity! Ruthie always put herself together! She would always get her hair done, keep her nails polished, and always did her make-up! At the first assisted living facility – they offered hair and nail appointments and visits to the podiatrist to make sure her feet were in tip-top shape. Once Covid came into the picture, keeping up appearances was no longer a priority. So, what do you do when your loved one is put in this situation? Become their makeup and hairstylist! If someone else is styling your loved one, send them a tutorial. Every time we visited Ruthie at the assisted living facility, we took a mere 10 minutes to fix her hair and put on makeup and rub cream on her hands which made her feel like a princess! We all know when we look good, we feel good! So take the time to make your loved one feel their best!

How many times a day do you get robocalls or scams that come through as mail/postal mail, text messages, or through social media that are related to a charity, lottery, sweepstakes, or related to your banking or current debts? There is not a day that goes by that I do not get some form of a scam that comes my way. The bottom line is, we are all susceptible to these scams, especially the elderly.

Spring is coming….and you know what that means! Daylight savings time - which is this Sunday! How do you help your loved one's time clock get accustomed to the change? What worked best for us was to keep Ruthie really occupied during the day so that she would go to bed a little bit sooner which caused her to wake up earlier the following morning. If you do this a little bit at a time leading up to Sunday, before you know it, your loved one will be right on track!

Happy National Dance the Waltz Day! If one is able, there is nothing better than getting up to dance. You don’t even need to go anywhere! Whether it is classic or salsa, even a little jazz, just turn that music on and watch your loved one beam! The video above was taken just before Ruthie went to live in a memory care unit at an assisted living facility. We had so much fun that night and when the music played, she just had to get up and dance!
