FIRST DEGREE R**E - DISMISSED!!!
Today, we walked into Buncombe County Criminal Superior Court at the top of the trial calendar, fully prepared to begin the jury trial of State v. Issiah Bradley. Issiah was facing one of the most serious accusations a person can face: First Degree R**e.
Instead, today the State dismissed all charges against Issiah Bradley.
And with that, a chapter that has consumed more than two years of this young manโs life finally came to an end.
When this case began, Issiah was a college student, just six credit hours away from earning his Bachelorโs Degree. He is an enrolled member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, a young man with his education, his work, and his future in front of him.
Then his life was put on pause.
He had to withdraw from college. He lost his job. And for more than two years, he lived under the enormous weight of these charges and the uncertainty of what would happen to his future.
Through all of it, Issiah maintained his innocence from the very beginning.
Our office has spent countless hours investigating this case, examining the evidence, working through the details, and preparing to put this case before a jury. We came to court this morning ready for trial.
But there will be no trial.
The charges are dismissed. All of them.
Today, Issiah was surrounded by the people who have stood beside him throughout this ordeal, including his mom, Joan Bradley, and the family members who came to court to support him. Seeing them walk out of that courthouse together, knowing that this case is finally over, is one of those moments that reminds us why we do this work.
We are absolutely thrilled for Issiah and his family.
Two years cannot simply be handed back to him. But today, the uncertainty ends. Today, he gets the opportunity to move forward, return to the life that was interrupted, finish those last six credit hours, earn that degree, and begin building the future that has been waiting for him.
Issiah Bradley maintained his innocence.
Today, every charge against him was DISMISSED.
Now go finish that degree, Issiah.
Your future is yours again.
