Every divorce lawyer is different, so the biggest takeaway is ASK the lawyer or their office what the best method is for scheduling. With my office, the best way to immediately schedule is by calling my assistant during office hours. Emailing the staff can work, but we get a lot of emails and email volleys on schedule can result in dates being gone before a client responds. It is not fastest to email me (I forward them to my assistant to schedule 90% of the time after I see the email).

If you have an urgent issue, explain to the staff what the urgent issue is, so the staff can talk to the lawyer. If you’re talking to your lawyer and your lawyer can/will schedule themselves, then that’s another route is to ask them. Paying attention to what the individual office requests for scheduling makes a significant difference.

Also, opening up your availability may achieve a time sooner for you. If you only can talk during lunch hours or on a Friday afternoon, then those slots may be full or unavailable.

I have explained it to clients that if it’s a doctor’s office, you schedule with the front desk and you do so by calling. The doctor doesn’t schedule themselves…but the doctor can indicate a few days there may be a late slot NOT on the general schedule or double book themselves in the event of an emergency. Lawyers are no different. Sometimes, if I want to get in to my doctor, I need to pick appointment times I don’t love. Similarly, you’ll have to balance urgency and your schedule to get an appointment as soon as possible.
