"WASHINGTON – U.S. Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL), Ranking Member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, sent a letter to the Government Accountability Office (GAO) urging them to investigate the Trump Administration’s decision to rapidly establish new, hidden immigration courts.

In the Homeland Security Act, Congress preserved the separation of Department of Homeland Security (DHS) immigration enforcement functions from immigration courts’ adjudicatory role. Yet the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR) is establishing new courts in DHS facilities where they are managed by DHS personnel.

'DOJ regulations require that members of the public, including family members and loved ones, have access to immigration courts—but my staff documented DHS officials, including U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) personnel, regularly prohibiting public access to immigration courtrooms at DHS facilities. Worse still, the Administration has established new court locations—where judges are appearing virtually—without providing formal notice to the public and in apparent violation of regulations and policies intended to ensure transparency and due process in immigration court proceedings,' Durbin wrote"

"The policy states the City of Richmond will comply with ICE only when legally required to.

City officials said the policy is meant to make Richmond a more welcoming place for everyone, regardless of immigration status.

'A well rounded life means more than just getting by. It means taking your kids to school, going to work, seeing a doctor, and being a part of this city without looking over your shoulder, Councilor Nicole Jones of the 9th district said."

The policy states no city employee can request or disclose the immigration status of someone unless it’s required for a few reasons, such as a judicial warrant or court order.

"While Trump officials and congressional Republicans have touted the termination of most TPS designations — 13 of 17 nations covered under the program have been stripped of protected status since Trump returned to office — immigrant advocates say the administration appears to be softening a signature policy ahead of the Nov. 3 midterm elections.

“This is different,” said Jessica Bansal, an attorney focused on TPS litigation.

Bansal speculated that Trump officials might be reluctant to deprive more American businesses of employees so close to the election. Previous TPS cancellations have caused turmoil for critical U.S. industries."

Ukrainian immigrants, due to lose humanitarian protections from deportation today, are the latest group expected to get a reprieve.

"The Trump administration cut legal immigration in half early this year with policies blocking visas for immigrants from nearly half the globe.

The State Department issued just 26,000 immigrant visas, which grant a green card and legal permanent resident status, in February, compared with an average of 52,000 a month in the years before Trump took office, according to the most recent available government."

A freeze on visas made it all but impossible to immigrate from dozens of countries. Student and work visas also declined.
