The reports out of Iran show a shocking number of people killed during the most recent protests. This massacre was in response to people exercising their right to protest. The exact number of deaths is still unclear due to the unprecedented communications blackout by Iran’s government, but it is in the thousands.

President Trump promised the Iranian people that “help is on the way” but no tangible action has been taken by the administration. In fact, the Travel Ban and current USCIS adjudicative pause is the exact opposite of “helping” Iranians. These policies only exacerbate their plight.

We have called on the Iranian government to respect human rights many times, but those calls fall on deaf ears. We call on President Trump to lift the Travel Ban for eligible Iranians and for USCIS to resume adjudication of their benefit requests.

Actions speak louder than tweets!

USCIS is applying stricter discretionary review for applicants from 39 “high-risk” countries under the December 16, 2025 Proclamation. Officers now weigh negative factors—especially security-related issues—more heavily, making strong evidence, rehabilitation, and clear explanations critical. Even applicants outside these countries can benefit from understanding how USCIS evaluates discretion.

Warmest wishes for a bright and Happy Yalda from all of us at Dragoman PLLC!

Tonight, we celebrate “Shab-e Yalda” or “chelleh”which is the winter solstice and the longest night of the year. This ancient Persian tradition is a beautiful celebration of the triumph of light over darkness and the promise of the coming dawn. Families and friends gather to share pomegranates and nuts, and to recite the timeless poetry of Hafez.

In our work, we witness firsthand the “long nights” many individuals and families face while navigating the complexities of the U.S. immigration system. Current challenges can often feel like an endless winter of uncertainty and waiting.

However, Yalda serves as a vital reminder: no matter how deep the darkness or how long the night, the sun inevitably shines again. Just as the days begin to lengthen starting tomorrow, we believe that perseverance and hope lead to brighter, better days ahead.

A particularly fulfilling case. I represented a young man who needed help with an immigration issue. I don’t speak Spanish, and he didn’t speak English! That did not stop us communicating though. With the help of professional interpreters, we were able to understand each other quite well. In fact, we were able to communicate with each other regarding non-legal issues with the aid of technology.

I always caution against using automated translations for legal needs as it can lead to case denials and rejections (see my previous post on the use of AI). However, in the text exchange above there wasn’t a legal issue on the line- it was about getting tacos with a happy client!

The EB-1A immigration category, also known as the “Einstein Visa,” has stringent criteria for individuals at the top one percent of their field. Working with clients who qualify is inspiring due to their exceptional achievements.

We highlight one such client, a medical specialist dedicated to innovative surgical procedures that reduce pain and improve quality of life. His petition was over 1300 pages and needed a quick approval to ensure his crucial research would not be disrupted.

We ensured his technical achievements were clearly explained, providing a detailed legal analysis and precise references for each criterion. The petition was approved within five business days, even during the Independence Day holiday. Congratulations to our client and the medical community in the United States!

Thinking of using AI for translations or drafting petitions? Think again. While AI can be a useful tool, it is still just that: a tool. If you don’t have the knowledge and experience or the required diligence, you will hurt your case by resorting to this tool for your needs.
