Do I need an Apostille, Certification, or Legalization?

George has a notarized power of attorney that he needs to use in the Philippines. He wanted to know whether he needs an apostille, certification or legalization.

Since the United States and the Philippines are members of the Hague Convention on Documents, the answer for George’s power of attorney is an apostille.

Apostille, certification or legalization? How do you know which one you need?

George in California has a notarized power of attorney that he needs to use in the Philippines. His question gives us a good place to start: the country where your document will be used matters.

That’s where the Hague Apostille Convention comes in.

More than 100 countries, including the United States and the Philippines, participate in the Convention, which created a simpler way for public documents from one member country to be used in another.
