Days after a jury was seated, Uber settled a sexual assault case and kept the terms confidential. That's the pattern: when the evidence is about to be aired in open court, the case quietly goes away. Survivors who file suit are asking a simple question: what did the company know about who it put behind the wheel, and what did it do about it? Trials and discovery are how that question gets answered. A confidential check does not answer it.

If the allegations in this Montgomery County suit are proved, the harm wasn't only one man's conduct. It was an institution that moved the problem rather than stop it. Maryland's Child Victims Act exists so survivors can ask those questions decades later. Courts and discovery are where the paper trail finally gets read.

Five years after the Facebook Files, the most meaningful teen-safety changes are coming from lawsuits, not voluntary fixes. Plaintiffs reframed the cases around product design, meaning what the app was built to do rather than what users post. That framing is getting past the "we're just a platform" defense. A settlement with the states doesn't close the book on the families who were hurt. Discovery is where we learn what these companies knew about their own products.

Three firefighters died in a vacant Baltimore rowhome in 2022. The families are still fighting to hold the city to account. Their amended complaint alleges the city knew these buildings were dangerous and discontinued a safety program without telling the people sent inside. Those are allegations the city disputes, and a court gets to test them. When the people who protect us are hurt by known hazards, the public deserves answers.

Summer road trips. Moving your kids back to college. Your daily commute. No matter where you’re headed, accidents can happen when you least expect them.
Here are a few simple steps to remember if you’re ever involved in a car crash:
🚗 First, get to a safe place if you’re able.
📋 Exchange information with the other driver.
👮 Call the police so there’s an official accident report.
🩺 And if you’re hurt—or even if you’re not sure—get checked out by a doctor. Some injuries don’t show up right away.
Hopefully you’ll never need this advice, but knowing what to do ahead of time can help protect your health and your rights.

Congratulations to all of the officers sworn in at the American Association for Justice’s Annual Convention. We are especially proud to congratulate Chris Nace on his election as AAJ Vice President and look forward to his leadership in advancing the organization’s mission.

This year’s convention also honored the extraordinary pro bono initiative established in the aftermath of September 11, which grew into the largest and most successful pro bono effort in U.S. legal history, providing vital legal representation during a dark time in our nation’s history.
